The mother of the one-month-old Durban baby Siwaphiwe Mbambo was arrested and police threaten to sue because of wasted time and resources.

S’bongile Mbambo, the mother of one-month-old kidnapped baby, has been detained along with a man and a woman who was involved.

The South African police found baby Siwaphiwe on the N3 in Durban after a mass search had been issued to find her. Police had pulled out all the stops to find the baby, dispatching officers, vehicles, helicopters and even offering a R250 000 reward for any information that could lead to the safe return of the baby.

But now, Major-General Bala Naidoo‚ KwaZulu-Natal deputy provincial commissioner for the detective service says they want to sue the suspects for creating a false case and costing the police money and resources that could have been deployed elsewhere.

News broke out last week Friday that Mbambo, baby Siwaphiwe and her eight-year-old son were hijacked while sitting in their white Toyota Yaris at City View Shopping Centre in Durban by two armed men.

The criminals took off with the car and the baby. However, the vehicle was recovered hours later with baby Siwaphiwe nowhere to be found.

This prompted the extensive search and #BringBackDurbanBaby trended on Twitter over the weekend.
