Since the inception of the MTV Africa Music Awards (Mamas) six years ago, Durban has been the home to this prestigious awards ceremony, but that will no longer be the case

Johannesburg, The City of Gold, will for the first time host the awards ceremony, which is aimed at celebrating African talent. And we might be lucky to see Alicia Keys as one of the international acts come 22 October.

Shortly after the announcement was made, we spoke to's former Managing Director of Channels, Monde Twala, who is now the Vice President: BET Youth and Music at Viacom International Media Networks Africa. “The decision to bring the Mamas to Johannesburg was overdue, because the City of Gold is the Mecca of entertainment and it is a multi-cultural melting pot," he said, adding that African artists were becoming more collaborative.

"The Mamas speak to a broader narrative - it speaks to excellence and it is an exchange of cultures between in the African continent," he added. Even though they haven't decided on the international artists that will perform, Monde did hint that R&B superstar Alicia Keys, whose latest hit single - In Common -  was remixed by South Africa's very own Black Coffee, might be headlining this year's ceremony.
