A three-year-old mute girl has said her first word after demolishing a kilo of cream cheese each week.

Fields Taylor was unable to speak due to suffering from GLUT1 deficiency, an incurable genetic disorder which affects a person's ability to speak, but after doctors put her on a high-fat ketogenic diet she said her first word: "Mum."

Her mother Stevie told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "The first time I heard Fields say 'Mum' was just wonderful.

"I didn't really believe that something so simple as changing her diet could make such a big difference.

"But within weeks you could see it working - she was more alert and her personality seemed to come out a bit more.

"Then, one morning I was in the kitchen and I heard this little voice. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"There have been times when I've thought I would never hear her speak.

"It's fabulous to know that she does have a voice inside her and we can communicate."

Fields' condition leaves her brain starved of energy because her body is unable to pump enough glucose around, so medical experts recommended putting her on the high-fat ketogenic diet so the brain will use the fat as energy instead of glucose.
