My beautiful Ruby (5/7)

Jessica was heartbroken when she found a letter to a girl in her boyfriend’s blazer.

Jessica stuck her head out of the window and shouted, “Go away, JP. Leave me alone! If you don’t know why I’m upset, then you aren’t very clever, are you? Or maybe you think I’m stupid. Well, I’m not stupid, JP. And I never want to see you again.”

But of course, that was impossible. She would have to see him again. She would have to see him every day at school, sitting there in the same class as she was. And it was going to be so hard. Maybe she would just stop going to school altogether!

The next morning, Jessica told her mother she felt sick. But her mother was very stern. “Jessica, my girl, the Matric exams are close. You need to be at school every day. Take a Panado if you feel sick. But you must go to school.” So Jessica had to go to school, with her school tie knotted around her neck and her heart feeling broken. And there was JP at the classroom door, laughing and joking with his friends – as if nothing was wrong. As if he hadn’t spent a night with Ruby and then written to her: One night is all it takes to fall in love forever . . .

“Jessica, baby,” JP said when he saw her.
