Professor Tshilidzi Marwala may be one of the smartest men in South Africa. He shares his wisdom with us.

He has achieved so much, and been awarded a great number of honours in recognition of his work, particularly in the field of engineering science. He has come a long way since his youth in Thohoyandou, in the Vhembe district of Limpopo.

Slightly daunted, DRUM sets off in search of a rather inspiring academic from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Professor Tshilidzi Marwala.

At the university, Prof, Marwala (44) bounds up to us with quick, long strides. A smile covers his face as he opens his arms for a bear hug. He ushers us into his office on the first floor of the west wing of the UJ and warmly beckons us over to join him.
