Nepal earthquake claims over 1 000 lives

An earthquake that hit Nepal on Saturday morning has claimed 1 900 lives

On Saturday morning, Nepal was devastated by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake which has claimed 1 900 lives so far.

The disaster also caused an avalanche at Mount Everest and its base camp, where climbers and support teams set up camp.

A group of South African schoolgirls from St Mary's Diocesan School for Girls in Pretoria were in Nepal at the time of the earthquake but they have all been accounted for.

According to the Department of International Relations and Corporation, no South African casualties have been reported so far.

"They [South Africans] are all accounted for and safe,'' said Dirco spokesperson Clayson Monyela.

The earthquake's effects have been reported to have reached India and Bangladesh.
