"Overwhelming evidence” in the murder investigation of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa is being gathered, senior Gauteng police officials said

on Thursday.

“We are busy investigating and getting overwhelming evidence,” Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner for detective services Major General Vincent Leshabane told reporters in Johannesburg.

"The only thing left is to link the suspect with the crime,” he added.

He said the team investigating the murder was travelling between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal every week.

Meyiwa was at his girlfriend's home in Vosloorus on October 26 last year when a man entered and shot him, apparently during a scuffle.

Zanukuhle Mbatha, initially arrested for the murder, was released from custody in November due to a lack of evidence.

In related crime news, Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Leetja Mothiba said, in the quarter from April to June, police arrested 20 suspects for taxi violence in the province, with 12 cases pending in court.

Taxi violence was "extremely complicated" as the problem flowed into and out of Gauteng from other provinces. A task team including the transport department was looking into such crimes.

“Most of the problems lie with the administration part, the permits, all those things. This market is oversaturated. There are more than enough taxis in this province and nationally,” Mothiba said.

He said they had appealed to Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi for the “regulatory environment [to] kick in”.
