Ishmet Davidson has been appointed general manager in Media24's news division, the company announced on Wednesday.

Davidson had been acting in the position since Fergus Sampson left the group in October, Media24 said in a statement.

Media24 is Africa’s leading publishing group that has interests in newspapers, digital publishing and magazines including Drum.

Over the past three years Davidson has been in charge of the company's local newspapers and more recently Afrikaans titles Die Burger and Son.

Media24 chief executive Esmaré Weideman said she had enormous faith in Davidson's abilities. "He is respected by editors and managers alike and has a reputation as an inspiring leader who is firm, fair, cost-conscious and has a keen eye for detail," she said. As of December 1 Lisa MacLeod will join Media24 as the general manager of digital publishing.

She was currently head of operations at and associate editor of the Financial Times in London.

"We are delighted to be welcoming Lisa back to South Africa and to her new home at Media24," Weideman said.

"She comes with a wealth of experience in print and digital integration and will play a key role in commercialising our digital assets."
