New hope for HIV couples

Ntombi and her husband Ntatho took part in a study along with 1 763 other couples across Africa, Asia, North and South America. In South Africa the study was conducted by Wits University from May 2009. Dr Guy de Bruyn says the results are a major breakthrough, “this study is no cure for HIV but it conclusively demonstrates that treatment of the HIV – infected person reduces the chances that they will transmit the virus to their partner.”
