A man has been arrested for hitting a woman with a brick and then raping her.

Shock over Mpuma accident

Political parties expressed shock on Tuesday about the deaths of 29 people in a bus accident on the Moloto road near Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga.

"The ANC sends its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased," said Jackson Mthembu. spokesman for the African National Congress, which said it was saddened by the deaths.

The ANC called on all road users to be careful on the roads.

The African Christian Democratic Party said the investigation into the accident should determine whether the bus was overloaded.

Spokeswoman Cheryllyn Dudley said: "We call on traffic authorities to launch an investigation into the cause of this tragic accident, and to determine whether there was a possibility that the bus was overloaded or unroadworthy."

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said a team would investigate the accident. – SAPA

  Eight arrested for KZN murders Eight people were arrested in connection with the murders of two KwaZulu-Natal pensioners, one of whom was strangled with the tubes of her oxygen tank. The bodies of John Morrison and Hester Noble were found in their Shongweni Valley home last week by neighbours. Noble, 68, who was suffering from emphysema, was strangled with the tubes of her oxygen tank. Morrison, 72, was strangled with a wire. He was gaggedand his hands were tied behind his back. Their house had been ransacked and trashed, and their car stolen.

Zwane said four of the eight men arrested had been charged with murder, and the other four with receiving stolen items, which were believed to belong to the couple. – SAPA

Man hit by train

A pedestrian died when he was hit by a train in Klipspruit, Soweto, on Tuesday, paramedics said.

ER24 and other rescue services rushed to the scene fearing the train had hit a vehicle, with the possibility of numerous patients. On arrival, they found only the pedestrian.

The man, in his 30s, died on the scene. – SAPA

Man arrested for rape

A man has been arrested for hitting a woman with a brick and then raping her, Johannesburg police said.

Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said the 27-year-old woman had been with friends at the block of flats where she lived in Noord Street in central Johannesburg on Monday night. She was on her way to bed in her room when she met the man, whom she knew, because they lived in the same flat. "He took her to another room and assaulted her with a brick before he raped her, said Mbele. She screamed for helpand he ran away.

She sustained head injuries and was taken to hospital where she was treated and discharged.

The arrested man, a 22-year-old Zimbabwean national, faced charges of rape and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. – SAPA

Man arrested for robbing students

A 24-year-old man was arrested for robbing students in Johannesburg, Gauteng police said.

He was apprehended on Monday after robbing a 19-year-old man and his friend on their way home, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said. They were walking when he confronted them with a firearm and demanded their cellphones. Mbele said he searched them and took their calculators. – SAPA
