Port Elizabeth is set to shine when it becomes host to a major music festival that traditionally would be celebrated in one of South Africa’s big three metros – Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

Not this time.

The Eastern Cape metro will come to life when international acts including US R’nB crooner Ne-Yo, US rapper Ludacris and Jamaican-American reggae singer Shaggy take to the stage at the first Mbay Mega Fest billed to take place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on 02 June.

Award-winning house music trio Mi Casa and dance-floor whiz kid Zakes Bantwini top the list of local acts set to perform at the festival, which organisers said will take place annually.

“Port Elizabeth is a sophisticated music-supporting market and offers world-class infrastructure, and by hosting the MBay Mega Fest we are hoping to put the friendly city firmly on the map as a destination of choice for large international festivals of this nature,” said Andrea Wessels, festival director and CEO of Zeranza SA, the events management company behind the event.

“Our aim is to decentralise large festivals of this nature from the usual major urban areas in South Africa, and bring major national and international acts to emerging cosmopolitan centres such as PE,” she added.

Gates to the all-day festival will open at 10h00am and the cost of tickets, on sale now at Computicket, range between R150 and R500.
