Nigeria: World's happiest place

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria, has the kind of humidity that feels like a warm towel. The minute you shake that off, you notice the massive board that proudly welcomes you to Nigeria. Underneath the greeting is the tagline: “The happiest place in the world!”

When I last visited Nigeria, that poster made me laugh. But now a global survey has confirmed it: in a 53-country poll, Nigerians were rated at 70 points for optimism. By contrast, Britain scored a pessimistic -44. Why so glum, Britain? And what in the world makes Nigerians so happy?
