No more ironing for me!

Two years ago, while working as a domestic worker, she made a dream board on which she pasted pictures of everything she wanted in life. But she didn’t leave it there. . .

Alice Mthini made her dreams come true, and can now tick off most of the things she pasted on that board, including moving out of a cramped Yeoville flat and into an upmarket townhouse in Joburg’s northern suburbs.

Alice (39) smiles warmly as we enter her beautiful Fourways home on a cold winter morning. Her life couldn’t be more different from the time she earned a living as a domestic worker two years ago. Today she’s an executive unit leader for cosmetics company Avon, which employs salespeople to sell its range of beauty products.

Wonderful though her progress has been, she’s got even bigger goals in mind. “I’m closer to where I want to be in life,” she says, “but there’s still a long way to go.”

Read all about her perseverance and success in DRUM, 7 July 2011.
