The first thing you notice about actor Innocent Masuku (32) is that he has lost a lot of weight since he played the rebellious Bobo in the SABC1 drama Yizo Yizo. The second fact that strikes you about the man who now plays Baksteen in Tshisa is, despite his name, he’s anything but innocent. He doesn’t beat about the bush when asked about his dramatic weight loss. “I no longer drink as much as I used to,” he says candidly.

“When I started in showbiz 14 years ago I was an alcoholic, drug addict and a heavy smoker. I was a druggie for almost five years but today I’m proud to say I’ve been clean since 2007.” So what helped him kick his alcohol and drug habits, we ask him at Chaf Pozi in Orlando East, Soweto, where he is clearly a regular customer.

“I witnessed the downfall of a lot of celebrity friends whose names I’d rather not mention,” he says. “I used to spend every last cent on drugs when I was still starting out in the industry and I wasn’t making a lot of money.
