Oliver Tambo's sister Getrude dies

Getrude Tambo, the sister of former ANC president Oliver Tambo, has died, the party in the Eastern Cape said on Monday.

"A great woman has passed away and we all mourn the loss," spokesman Mlibo Qhoboshiyane said in a statement.

"We salute the family, [for its] enormous contribution to the liberation of all South Africans."

The African National Congress in the Eastern Cape sent its condolences to the family.

According to the SABC, Getrude Tambo, 84, was Oliver Tambo's only surviving sister.

Family spokesman Mzukisi Tambo told the public broadcaster that she died in the early hours of Saturday morning of a stroke and pneumonia at St Patrick's hospital in Bizana.
