Over 60 arrested in Joburg over weekend

Police arrested 64 people for various crimes around the Johannesburg CBD over the weekend.

Police spokesman Xoli Mbele said the police operations started on Friday and ended on Sunday morning.

"Two suspects were arrested for business robbery, six for common robbery, one for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, three for theft out of motor vehicle, two for armed robbery, one for pointing with firearm, six for possession of dagga, four for possession of suspected stolen property and 17 for shoplifting," said Mbele.

He said the rest of the people were arrested for possession of counterfeit DVDs, assault, dealing in liquor without a licence, theft, fraud and driving under the influence of alcohol.

"Most of the suspects are appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court tomorrow," Mbele said.
