Brazilian football legend Pele is undergoing a type of temporary kidney dialysis, the Sao Paulo hospital treating him said Friday.

But the clinical condition of the 74-year-old was improving, the hospital said a statement, and he is both lucid and breathing unaided.

Doctors Fabio Nasri and Marcelo Costa Bastia added the hospital would issue further updates when there was new information.

Pele himself tweeted Thursday: "I was not put into intensive care today, I was simply relocated to a special room within the hospital for privacy purposes only," and stated he had "many international trips already planned" for the new year.

On Monday Pele was readmitted to hospital with a urinary infection having previously been released on November 15 after having kidney, bladder and urinary stones removed.
