Poor black South Africans suffer the most crime

Henke Pistorious made headlines recently with his claims that white people are under attack in SA. But statistics prove him wrong.

The shocking story of Paralympic and Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day has grabbed world headlines.

The reports show we’re a nation gripped by crime and fear. And the overwhelming

impression seems to be that people like Oscar and his model girlfriend – white and middle class – are the main victims of crime in South Africa.

Oscar’s father, Henke, fuelled that belief recently when he implied that white people are under attack and have been abandoned by the ANC government and left to defend themselves.

The story may have alarmed hundreds of thousands of potential foreign tourists who don’t know any better, but experts say Henke’s claims are completely false.

Statistics show that poor, traditionally black and coloured townships across the country suffer much more under crime than mostly white, affluent neighbourhoods.

South African Police Service statistics for last year show how different crime is in a black area such as Diepsloot in Gauteng compared to Sandton, an affluent and largely white area in the same province.
