Parts of Cape Town's southern suburbs were without power on Monday afternoon, the city said.

The cause of the power failure was a trip-out at an electricity switching station, spokeswoman Kylie Hatton said.

"During switching operations (transferring feeders from the main bus-bar to the reserve bar) at the Athlone switching station, the power was disrupted, thus tripping the whole station," she said.

Affected areas included Heideveld, Bonteheuwel, Epping, Thornton, Langa, Belgravia, Crawford, Rondebosch East, Vanguard Drive area towards Newlands, Mowbray, Observatory, the outskirts of Woodstock, Paarden Eiland and Maitland.

Hatton said technicians were working on the problem. However, it was not known when residents would have their electricity restored.
