Three siblings appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of murder, kidnapping, and defeating the ends of justice, Pretoria police said.

Samuel Malatji, Regina Malatji, and Lillian Malatji allegedly locked their father Benedict Malatji, 80, and nephews Kentridge Malatji, 30, and Thabo Malatji, 23, in a room for two years at the family's home in Atteridgeville, said Captain Bonginkosi Msimango.

They were arrested on Monday night, he said.

"Kentridge managed to escape and reported the matter to the police, and police escorted him to the family where he was kept," said Msimango.

There they found Benedict Malatji's decomposing body.

"The younger boy, Thabo, was found in the same room with his dead grandfather; he was taken to hospital because of the trauma he suffered," Msimango said.

Police found the two sisters praying in another room, and their brother hiding under a bed.

The three would appear again in court on September 16, when they would bring a formal bail application. Until then, they would remain in custody.
