About R2 billion has been set aside to address water problems in the North West, premier Thandi Modise said on Sunday.

"In terms of the plan, R300 million is earmarked for water projects to communities experiencing 24 problems with water provision within the jurisdiction of Madibeng Local Municipality," Modise said.

She was addressing residents of Majakaneng on Saturday who had been protesting since Thursday because of the lack of water in the area.

Modise said three boreholes would be commissioned within the next seven days to supplement water supply in the area.

"Violent protest and chaos will only serve to disrupt the momentum of interventions aimed at getting service delivery that was negatively affected by fraud and corruption within your municipality back on track," she told residents.

Modise has instructed the Madibeng municipality to open a valve that had been directing water to a nearby mine, so that water could be redirected to the residents of Majakaneng.
