‘Grey’s Anatomy’ viewers in the US, took to Twitter to voice their shock following the tragic death of neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepherd played by Patrick Dempsey.

Warning and apologies to all Grey’s Anatomy fans who have not seen this episode.

Derek, who’s often referred to as Dr McDreamy by fans, died following a car crash, in the episode which aired in the US on Thursday night.

The Doctor has been a fixture on the show since it was first aired in 2005.

In a cruel twist, written by series creator Shonda Rhimes, the final scenes opened with Derek witnessing a horrific car crash and rushing to help all of the injured people on the scene.

Of course the incident was the perfect scenario for him to also murmur his signature line: “It’s a great day to save lives.”
