SA Olympic teams get govt backing

The government has contributed R34.2 million to the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) in preparation for the London Olympics, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said on Friday.

Mbalula was speaking at a media breakfast in Sandton where he handed over cheques to Sascoc and national sports federations ahead of the games.

Sascoc received R26.2 million, with the remainder given to various sports federations. The SA Football Association got R3 million, Swimming SA R2 million, and SA Hockey, Athletics SA, and the Paralympic team R1 million each.

Mbalula said the government had offered its unwavering support to the South African Olympic team. Sascoc also received R73.8 million from the National Lottery Board
