It is all systems go for the upcoming Grade 12 National Senior Certificate examinations, says Umalusi CEO Mafu Rakometsi.

It is all systems go for the upcoming Grade 12 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, Umalusi CEO Mafu Rakometsi said on Tuesday. "Umalusi is satisfied with the preparations for the end-of-year exams, and is confident that the general system is adequately prepared to run these assessments successfully," Rakometsi told reporters in Johannesburg. Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, moderates the educational systems and processes.

"All examination papers are moderated and approved by Umalusi before they can be written by learners," said Rakometsi.

Altogether 551,656 full-time pupils and 135,259 part-time pupils across the country were registered to write the NSC exams, which start on October 20.

Various preparations had been made to ensure the country's readiness for the exams.

These included the increase of examination centres across the country.

"These examinations will take place across more than 8110 examination centres as compared to 6699 examinations centres in 2013," said Rakometsi.

The number of markers had also increased from 35,000 in 2013, to 41,509 in 2014.

"Marking protocol has also been adjusted to improve the quality of marking," said Rakometsi.

This included the introduction of a senior marker who would supervise a group of around five to six markers.

The senior markers would then be supervised by a chief marker.

"This is done to ensure that marking is done according to standards," said Rakometsi.

Umalusi is tasked with monitoring the administration of the national examinations, verifying the marking of the examinations and moderating the final results.

It is also mandated to moderate various elements within the school system, including internal assessments, pupils' tasks, as well as final tasks which contribute towards pupils' overall marks.
