The SABC on Wednesday apologised to EFF spokesperson Mbuyeseni Ndlozi for the "unprofessional" treatment he received from host Eben Jansen during a question and answer session a week ago.

"The behaviour of the host, Mr Eben Jansen, was completely uncalled for and unprofessional," the public broadcaster said in a statement.

"SABC has instituted disciplinary and corrective measures to ensure that Mr Jansen understands the severity of his transgression."

Jansen was anchoring the programme "SABC Newsroom" on Thursday morning asking Ndlozi his views on the debate over the country's statues.

Jansen has since been taken off the air after he lost his cool with the EFF's spokesperson.

The SABC said Jansen would not be presenting the programme until "News management deems it appropriate for his return".

"The SABC will not tolerate the kind of behaviour that was meted out to Mr Ndlozi," SABC group executive for news Jimi Matthews said in a statement.

"While it is appreciated that Mr Jansen has apologised for his poor professional conduct, corrective measures have been taken to ensure that such an incident never occurs again in the future."
