A soldier injured on deployment to the Central African Republic (CAR) has died in hospital, the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) said on Tuesday.

"One of the members that was injured in CAR has passed on in hospital in Bloemfontein yesterday [Monday]," Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said.

"He was discharged from the 1 Military hospital on April 19 and he went home to Bloemfontein. He collapsed yesterday and was rushed to hospital where he passed on."

Mabanga said he was rushed to 3 Military before he was taken to Pelonomi Hospital.

The cause of death was unknown and would only be available once the post mortem was completed, he said.

Thirteen SANDF soldiers were killed on March 23 when rebel fighters attacked them near the CAR's capital Bangui. Another 27 were wounded.

The SANDF troops were sent to the country under an agreement between South Africa and ousted CAR president Francois Bozize.
