School trips have been banned in KwaZulu-Natal following a spate of accidents involving school children, the Mercury newspaper reported on Monday.

Provincial education MEC Senzo Mchunu made the announcement on Sunday while addressing grieving families of 10 school children killed in Bergville on Saturday night.

The 10 pupils -- all aged under 13 and from the Okhombe Primary School --died when their taxi collided with a cow and then plunged into a river below.

The newspaper reported that the bridge railing had been vandalised by metal thieves.
