Sloppy Joe sandwich

A Sloppy Joe is beef mince with tomato sauce served as a burger. Enjoy our take on this sandwich.

Serves 4

Preparation: 10 min

Cooking: 20 min

15 ml (1 T) oil

10 g butter

1 onion, chopped

1 red pepper, chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

2 green chillies, chopped

500 g beef mince

80 ml (¼ c) water

250 ml (1 c) tomato sauce

few drops of Tabasco sauce

30 ml (2 T) Worcestershire sauce

15 ml (1 T) Dijon mustard

15 ml (1 T) vinegar

15 ml (1 T) brown sugar

salt and pepper

8 slices bread


  1. Heat the oil and butter in a pan over medium heat. Add the onion and red pepper; cook for 5 minutes or until soft.
  2. Add the garlic and chillies, cook for another minute, stirring often, then add the mince and cook for about 10 minutes.
  3. Stir in the water, tomato, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce, mustard, vinegar, brown sugar and seasoning. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Toast the bread and melt cheese on it. Top 4 slices with mince mixture and cover with the remaining slices.
