At a brief Q&A session Terry and Tony happily fielded questions from members of the press.

THE biopic about the world’s most famous statesman is tipped to be one of the biggest movie releases this year. Featuring Hollywood hotshots Idris Elba and Naomie Harris as leads, the entire movie was shot in South Africa. It also features a host of Mzansi stars, with TONY KGOROGE playing Walter Sisulu, Riaad Moosa as Ahmed Kathrada, Jamie Bartlett as prison guard James Gregory and TERRY PHETO as Evelyn Mandela.

When it was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival recently, the film apparently received a moving 10-minute standing ovation.

DRUM was recently invited to an exclusive local screening of the movie and we were particularly impressed with Tony’s portrayal of struggle veteran the late Walter Sisulu.

Terry’s character makes an early appearance in the movie as Mandela’s first wife Evelyn, and her portrayal is powerful although brief.

Tony and Terry attended the screening and when we chatted to them we were curious to know more about their experiences during the production of the movie.

“I was honoured to work with acclaimed British director Justin Chadwick,” said Terry.

“As a South African it’s very important to realise how revered our country, and particularly Nelson Mandela, is. When you get to tell a story about someone like him you have to approach it very carefully and with so much responsibility and sensitivity. “I was very impressed with the care Justin took with the movie because he wanted to give South Africans a film they can be really proud of.” Tony agreed wholeheartedly. “Justin is one of those directors who has a way with actors – I think it’s because he was an actor before he became a director.”
