A group of protesters blocked a busy section of Chris Hani Road in Soweto with tyres, rocks and tree stumps on Monday morning.

The group stood on the corner singing, while Johannesburg metro police monitored the situation.

The protestors taunted police singing: "angeke basondele, bayasaba", meaning "they won't come any closer because they are afraid of us".

Earlier, JMPDS Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the group was protesting over a lack of housing.

Traffic has been affected as the road joins the Soweto highway used by hundreds of motorists each morning trying to get to work.

Minnaar advised motorists to use Elias Motsoaledi Road as an alternative route.
