THE morning breeze sweeps across the streets, deserted at this early hour except for a few commuters heading for the taxi ranks. It's a typical township scene as the taxis start to weave their way to the city. But there's nothing typical about the extraordinary twins who emerge from the haze and charge down the road on a morning training run through the streets of their hometown of Diepkloof, Soweto.

Lebo and Lebogang Phalula (both 27) are fresh from a trip to Cape Town where they represented the country in the African Cross-Country Championships and helped South Africa clinch an overall bronze medal. And before that they guided the national team to a fourth-place finish in this year's European Cross-Country Championships held in Fuensalida, Spain.

The twins were also involved in a spectacular finish in the 1500 metres at the Yellow Pages SA Senior Championships in Durban recently where they led for the better part of the race before being pipped at the post by Caster Semenya, who took gold. Lebogang got the silver medal which, considering Semenya's recent form, was a great result.
