Thousands of workers at Harmony Gold's Kusasalethu mine on the West Rand have embarked on an illegal strike, the company said on Wednesday.

"Last night, following a mass meeting, about 300 people started barricading the area to Kusasalethu. They hindered the night-shift guys from going underground," said mine spokeswoman Marian van der Walt.

Subsequently, the mine, based near Carletonville, received a memorandum of various wage-related demands on Wednesday morning.

The majority of its 5400 workforce was on strike on Wednesday, said Van der Walt.

She said negotiations between the strikers and management had already begun.
