A college student has been arrested for murder.

A college student has been arrested for murder, Johannesburg police said on Wednesday.

Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said the body of a woman aged between 20 and 25 was found wrapped in a blanket by children at Legae Gardens in Newtown.

"The children alerted their mother who called the police," said Mbele.

The mother told police the blanket in which the woman was wrapped belonged to her and she had lent it to a student who lived nearby.

"Police arrested an 18-year-old man on Tuesday and he told them that the woman was with his roommate."

Mbele said the student told police that he found the woman wrapped in a blanket on Saturday.

"He told the police that he helped his roommate to dump the body," said Mbele.

The student faces murder charges and will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court as soon as he was formally charged.

Police were looking for the roommate who was believed to have fled.
