A suspected thief was stoned to death in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, according to a report on Monday.

The Cape Argus reported that the man's body was found in Kuyasa's School Site around 9am on Sunday.

The man was found lying in the road with two cement blocks next to him.

The killing brings to 17 the number of alleged criminals killed by a mob in Khayelitsha in the last year.

Western Cape premier Helen Zille established a commission of inquiry earlier this year to investigate an alleged relationship breakdown between police and the community.

Public hearings would be held at the end of this month.
