A Venezuelan talk show host, Rodner Figueroa, was fired after saying that American First Lady Michelle Obama looks like someone from the cast of Planet of the Apes.

Rodner (42), a Spanish-language American television network presenter and fashion expert, made the remark during an appearance on the popular talk show El Gordo y La Flaca (literal translation: The Fat Man and the Skinny Woman) while discussing the work of a make-up artist who copies the looks of famous people.

"Look, you know that Michelle Obama looks like she's part of the cast of the film Planet of the Apes," he said in Spanish.

The comparison quickly drew accusations of racism. Rodner was quick to issue an apology and said that his comments were not directed at the First lady but towards the make-up artist who had sought to replicate her look.

"I feel mortified, and I ask for your forgiveness, because there is no excuse for a professional like myself to make a comment like that, which can be interpreted as offensive and racist in these volatile times that our country [America] is experiencing," he wrote.

Meanwhile Michelle Obama and Ellen DeGeneres had themselves an "Uptown Funk" dance party on Ellen's show.
