Teen pregnancy: special report

HER huge belly looks strange on her small frame. She's a child, just 15 years old, yet she carries the evidence of one night's mistake everywhere she goes – in the form of her swollen, expectant tummy. "I'm so ashamed of this," says Charmaine who, just like three other girls in her Gauteng school, is heavily pregnant.

"But mostly I'm angry at myself for disappointing my family. I've let everyone down, including myself."

In fact, she's one of the lucky ones, as her mother understands what she's going through and is determined to help her through it. But for scores of other teenage girls, falling pregnant while stillat school means an end to their education and often the end of their hopes and dreams.
