The absent father

Michael didn't want to upset his family, especially his father who worked in the city, but he was determined to pursue his dreams

Michael remembered that dark morning years later – how he lay on his bed and, although it was the dead of night, he could not sleep. It was still dark outside, and he didn’t have a watch or alarm clock to tell the time. And time was passing very slowly.

Michael had tossed and turned all night, and now he lay quietly staring out into the darkness. His mind was in turmoil. He had never felt like this before in his young life.

There was a huge weight pressing on his soul – an impossible sacrifice; a terrible life changing decision.

Outside in the yard the cock began to crow. It was a Saturday, which meant no school. This pleased Michael as he felt quite exhausted. He loved school but he knew that had it been a school day he would have struggled to concentrate on his lessons. He snuggled deeper into his bed.

His thoughts were all over the place. There was a great deal of excitement in the house.
