Happy birthday to a man who has done so much for so many.

•Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was born in 1931 in Klerksdorp, North West.

He had polio as a child, which left his right hand slightly smaller than the other.

He initially wanted to become a doctor but didn’t have the money to study medicine so trained as a teacher instead.

When he was in his thirties he became disenchanted with the black education system and switched to theology.

He lived in Vilakazi Street, Soweto - the only street in the world where two Nobel Prize winners lived: namely himself and Nelson Mandela

He was appointed archbishop of Cape Town at the age of 54.

He’s credited with coining the term Rainbow Nation.
