The chase (1/6)

Everything went wrong – without warning!

The light of the bus rank shone through the black rainy night, lifting my spirits. My home village wasn’t asleep yet, I could tell. The shopping centre was open, but I couldn’t see any sign of customers. Glad to be home, I stepped off the bus onto the wet concrete paving of the rank. I had a luggage bag on one shoulder, a laptop bag hanging from the other, and a guitar gig-bag clamped to my back like a sleeping baby.

The bus drove off, heading for its next destination. Then I suddenly remembered! I’d left my brand new BlackBerry and my Kindle e-book reader on the bus! It was at the intersection, joining the main road. My heart pounded and my brain did some quick arithmetic. All my bags fell to the ground and my legs launched into a sprint after the bus, hoping there’d be traffic on the road to delay it.

I’ve never been a good runner, but that night I ran like the wind. The first attempt at whistling was futile. Beads of sweat broke out on my brow. I heard the bus shift into a higher gear. This time the whistle escaped my lips, the thin shrill of a desperate herd boy.

I shouted, “Hey! Stop! Hey!” I tripped over a brick and went sprawling in the mud.
