Three people died and 12 were injured when two taxis collided head-on, on the R55 in Olivenhoutbosch, Midrand, on Monday morning, paramedics said.

Paramedics found it difficult to access the injured passengers because the taxis were so extensively damaged, said ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson.

One woman, whose legs were broken, was trapped behind the seat of one of the taxi drivers, who was declared dead on the scene, she said.

"Paramedics tried as much as they could to stabilise her in the little space they had, while the four occupants that had been behind and beside her were removed...," Jackson said. The woman was airlifted to hospital.

The fire department used hydraulic equipment to free those trapped in the wreckage.

Twelve people were treated for moderate to serious injuries.
