, the KwaZulu-Natal Correctional Services department said.

Regional Commissioner Thulani Mdluli said Bonginkosi Nsibanyoni and Sphiwe Emanuel Khanye, who were from the Waterval Correctional Centre, were appearing for further charges at court on Monday, when they allegedly got a hold of a gun and then used the state vehicle that was transporting them to escape.

"The report further states that there was a female correctional officer whom they kidnapped during their exit, but [who was] lately safely recovered along Dundee road near Dunhauser together with the state vehicle," Mdluli said in a statement.

"The two are very dangerous... [with their] charges among others being... kidnapping and murder."

Dumisani Elphas Dlamini, 33, who was serving 17 years for murder at the Ncome Correctional Centre, escaped on Saturday. He was sentenced in 2007.

"The incident is currently under criminal investigation by Mondlo Police... and the Department of Correctional Services in the KZN province has instituted an internal investigation."

Further details on Dlamini's escape could not be immediately obtained.

Mdluli said anyone who had information on the escapees must come forward to the police or call 086 001 0111.
