After winning the bid in 2004, South Africa made history by hosting the FIFA World Cup for the first time in Africa

After winning the bid to host the prestigious tournament in Zurich in 2004, the moment of truth had finally arrived

The first match of the tournament took place at Soccer City in Johannesburg where Sphiwe Tshabalala scored the first goal of the match against Mexico.

The hosts failed to make it to the knockout stages, but Spain won the silverware for the first time in history.
