Traffic delays are expected on numerous Johannesburg routes on Sunday due to the 94.7 cycle challenge, metro police said.

"Approximately 29 000 cyclists will take to Johannesburg roads which will affect traffic in Woodmead down to the M1 South," said spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.

The cyclists would take Joe Slovo Drive, head onto the M2 East into Eloff Street, back onto the M2 East into Rissik Street, onto the Carr Street offramp, across, and take Nelson Mandela Bridge onto Jan Smuts Drive and Bram Fischer Drive, Minnaar said.

Other routes to be affected included Witkoppen Street, Summit Road, the N14, R511, and the R55.

As Rea Vaya bus routes would be affected, passengers were advised to include an hour extra to their travelling times.

The race was expected to start at 05:30 and finish by 16:00.

Officers would be on duty to divert traffic, Minnaar said.
