SILENCE fell over the courtroom as the judge prepared to read the prison sentence – silence so profound you could have heard an insect crawling across the floor. This was the moment the families of the victims had been waiting for – and when the judge was done speaking, they were satisfied. More than 500 years behind bars... it was no less than the man deserved.

Listening carefully in the Durban High Court, sitting on exactly the same bench she had occupied since the start of the trial three years earlier, was Dudu Ntetha. She held her breath as Thozamile Taki was sent to jail for murdering 13 women – one of whom was her best friend.

He was also found guilty on 16 counts of robbery and, in all, was handed a 533-year jail term. Parole will also not be granted to the 39-year-old, known as the Umzinto serial killer, and Dudu could finally breathe a sigh of relief. She could so easily have been one of Taki’s victims had a frantic phone call not spurred her into fleeing from his evil clutches. Dudu’s testimony in the trial helped put Taki away – but the real stars in the case, she says, are the investigating officers.
