What makes one develop such a condition?

Pharma Dynamics’ Allergy Advisor, Dr Mike Levin helps you understand allergies. The doctor answers some questions in trying to make you understand this condition. This is part of the series of questions we thought you might want answered.

The genetic predisposition to develop allergies is called “atopy”.  The combination of ones genes and one’s environment decides whether you will actually manifest as having an allergy or not.

It is thought that people who live in rural environments and are exposed to farm animals and certain types of infections are protected against allergies, whereas people who live in highly sanitised urban environment may be predisposed.

This is called the “hygiene hypothesis”.
