Understanding Epilepsy

NTANDAZO Mange wasn’t aware he’d drifted off until a friend who travelled to work with him brought it to his attention one day. According to his friend, Ntandazo (33) blanked out in the taxi they were travelling in, causing them to almost miss their stop.

It started happening more frequently and was sometimes accompanied by violent shaking but Ntandazo, who lives in Delft outside Cape Town, couldn’t remember any of it.

“When I came to, people would tell me I seemed dazed and disorientated,” he says. Sometimes Ntandazo blacked out completely and “woke up” to discover he had wet himself. “You have no idea how embarrassing it is for a proud, grown man to lose consciousness only to come to and realise he’s stained his pants,” the father of two confides.
