Uzalo, SABC1's first local telenovela, has clocked 5 million viewers on its debut night.

“I have been reliable told that 5 million people watched the first episode of Uzalo!” the show’s creator, Duma ka Ndlovu, wrote on his Facebook page. “Thank you South Africa. Thank you cast and crew, thank you team, thank you Lord.”

He added: “To my Uzalo family; this is not the time to gloat and pat ourselves on the back. This is not the time to revel in the fact that people are saying we are better than the other show that comes before us. This is not the time to beat ourselves on the chests.”

Uzalo is a new telenovela on SABC1, screened at 8:30 pm on weekdays.

It tells the story of two family dynasties, the Mdletshes and the Xulus, and the two young men who carry their hopes and legacies.

Duma, Gugulethu Zuma-Ncube and Pepsi Pokane are the producers.

The telenovela is shot on location in KwaMashu’s F-section, near Durban in KZN.

However, Duma is realistic about the challenge that lies ahead: “This is the time for us to go back to the drawing board and ask ourselves how we did it so that we can sustain it. It is the right time for us to reflect on the 5 million and how we can take it to 10. It is time for us to look at our stories and take them there and push the envelope.

“There is a gap in the market and it’s time we upped our game. Good is not good enough, brilliant is not good enough: we have to go for broke

“South Africa, here we come (and I am not gloating and I am not bragging). ”
