The ANC has shown surprise and shock at the booing of President Jacob Zuma during the Nelson Mandela memorial.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said they denounce the booing of the president.

Mthembu said all the plans leading up to the memorial had gone well; “We did not expect this. We are not here for any political liking or un-liking but to say goodbye to Mandela”

Besides the booing; the general mood at the stadium was of celebration where thousand braved the rain to pay respect to a man loved by many around the world.

Riverlea resident, Phumudzo Tshirangwana said she was happy to be at the stadium to celebrate a man who has done so much for the world.

“He sacrificed his life and family time so that we could have a better future,” she said.

An ANC, supporter who did not give his name said that the mine he worked for gave them the day off to attend the memorial.

“It's nice to see everyone here singing and not fighting” he said

German resident Bennett Vesely said he felt honoured to be in the country at such a special time.

“My family back home has been telling me that the memorial is being shown in Germany. The number of international presidents shows just how much of a personality Mandela was.”

Nkululeko Nxumalo is a student who saw a business opportunity and decided to come and sell Madiba merchandise at the stadium.

“I got here with 42 t-shirts but now am left with 12. I am grateful to be here and make some money as well,” he said.
