A woman who was born Caucasian has been passing herself off as black for years and she had been given merit for her plight for black people in her community.

Rachel Dolezal's parents exposed her true ethnicity when they were interviewed by BuzzFeed in the US. "She’s our birth daughter and we’re both of European descent,” Dolezal's father reportedly said. “We’re puzzled and it’s very sad,” he allegedly added.

Dolezal was the president of the NAACP in a small Washington DC's town. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is an African-American civil rights organization in the United States.

Dolezal was also an adjunct professor of African studies at a Washington university and she claimed to have received her Master's degree from Howard University which is a historically black institution.

Her biography on the university's website states that "her passion for civil rights is influenced by her years in Mississippi, where she advocated for equal right and participated in community development."

Dolezal trended in South Africa for another reason though, the hashtag #AskRachel became an instant hit as its own spin on #AskMmusi. SA celebs got heavily involved. Read some of their tweets here:
