Using food to care for your hair can help protect you from harmful chemicals you had no idea you were sensitive to.

It looks like DIY hair-care is making a gradual return and it isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Today's champion is honey.

Here are five reasons it's a good idea to add it to your treatment routine:

1. Moisture

Honey helps attract and retain moisture to your hair. It also replenishes that moisture,  fusing vitamins and minerals into strands for healthy results.

2. Fights frizz and ash

A teaspoon of honey mixed with your favorite conditioner fights frizz and adds shine to your hair. Be sure not to add too much as this will make your hair stiff and dry.

3. Anti-irritant

If you have a sensitive scalp or are always fighting or hair loss,  honey is definitely the secret ingredient for you. Honey exfoliates the scalp as well.

4. Helps prevent split ends

Mix a tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of mayonnaise and an egg and apply to the ends of your hair. You could also use your favorite hot oil treatment or hair mask with a tablespoon of honey to help prevent split ends.

5. Budget friendly

Honey can be purchased at your local grocery store at bargain prices and has multiple uses.
